Why IYO vs Direct Entry?
International students whose academic level is too high for the Foundation Program, but do not meet the entry requirements to go to their undergraduate degree program directly have the opportunity to enter The International Year One (IYO) program (International Diploma in Scotland) and progress to the second year of an undergraduate degree program (Year 3 in Scotland).
What makes this program different from undergraduate degree program are the levels of academic support available. To ensure that students are fully prepared to move onto the next stage of their degree students are given university-style teaching from teachers who are experienced of teaching students from an international background, high contact hours and small class sizes. This means more teaching and individual support. In addition to this, students will have access to extensive English language help and will have regular assessments to help them see how they are progressing. The program increases the students’ knowledge of the subjects they want to specialize in, students study the same modules as first year university students and at select centres students get to experience learning alongside first year students for certain modules.
It will help students improve their academic English, develop their study and research skills and fully prepares them for advanced entry into year 2 (Year 3 in Scotland) of an undergraduate degree. Successful completion of the program with the required grades will give students guaranteed progression to their chosen undergraduate degree and university. With two main start dates in September and January start The International Year One offers more flexible start dates than traditionally available for Direct Entry.
