How to decide the most appropriate/best program or study plan for a student?
Deciding the most appropriate/best program or study plan for a student can often be a challenge as every student is different. Helping students to make the right choice of university and course should never begin with the university but with the student:
- Their Academic strengths and weaknesses - what they are good and their academic background;
- The budget they have available;
- What kind of person they are and where they would like to live - do they prefer big cities, or would they like to live in a smaller place;
- What interests they have outside of the classroom - having fun at University is all part of the experience and being close to activities they enjoy doing is very important; Life and career goals - going to university overseas is an important step in a student’s life and career and how this fits into their future plans is very important;
- The course they want to study at university - it is very important to understand what a student wants to study and if the university can offer the program with the right specialization;
- English Language ability - this is very important as their level of English will help them decide where they can get the right level of support if they need to improve this skill.
Understanding the points above will help you advise the student on the most appropriate program or study plan, however, students should be encouraged to research their options and look at:
- Student Testimonials where available;
- Talk directly with current students and alumni if possible;
- Get advice and discuss with from family and friends, teachers, other students, and Education Consultants/ Agents;
- Visit the University websites;
- Take a Virtual tour;
- Watch Videos;
- Visit Education fairs;
- Look at Social Media;
- Read Brochures;
- Ask as many questions as possible.
Working with the student and understanding what is important for them will help you and them decide the most appropriate program and study plan.
